Shrimp Health Management Class of 2002

This past March we offered a three-day course in shrimp health management and disease diagnostics. Instructors included Dr. Rolland Laramore, Joe Mountain and Susan Laramore. This was the second year we taught this particular course and we were pleased to have a total of 16 students from various regions of the Americas. Although many participants were from our own state of Florida, others traveled from as far North as New York and as far south as Brazil. The course covered shrimp anatomy and physiology, infectious and non-infectious diseases, disease prevention and treatment, management and case histories. Participants learned how to bleed shrimp and fix them for further diagnostic tests. They also learned how to do stress tests, test for viruses using dot blot kits, and test tank water for bacteria. The class ended with a trip to Sable Bay, a local re-circulating fresh water shrimp farm.
