Dr. C. Rolland Laramore - Technical director of the Aquatic Animal Health Lab
Dr. Laramore is one of the world's leading experts on shrimp nutrition, health management, genetic selection for disease resistance and overall shrimp culture practices. He has been the director of AAHL since 1999. A large part of his job involves providing technical advice for a variety of HBOI aquaculture projects and to shrimp culture facilities worldwide. Additional responsibilities he assumes as director include writing analytical reports for clients, interpreting slides prepared for shrimp histology and running bioassays.

Dr. Laramore is also the president and director of research for Bonney, Laramore and Hopkins, Inc., a company that specializes in producing shrimp feeds and conducting shrimp nutrition research. The firm has been located on the campus of HBOI since 1997.

From 1992 to 1997 Dr. Laramore served as the president of Shrimp Culture Technologies Inc., (SCTI), located in Fort Pierce, FL. While there he worked to develop a specific pathogen free (SPF) shrimp genetics improvement program. Prior to that, he worked for Granada Genetics at Texas A & M, where he developed a method for controlling Baculovirus penaeid infections in shrimp hatcheries through the elevation of water temperature and isolation of rearing tanks. Dr. Laramore got his start working for Ralston Purina Co., in St. Louis, MO in 1971. While there he was responsible for bacteriological and viral testing of domestic animals. He was also involved in testing disinfectants, antibiotics and vaccines that were submitted by Purina's Health Industry Group for USDA registration.

Susan Laramore - Assistant manager of the Aquatic Animal Health Lab
Susan began working at HBOI in 1997. Prior to managing the health lab she worked with shrimp in the grow-out, hatchery and maturation facilities. She received her B.A. and M.S. at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in Molecular Biology and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Florida Tech, where she is working with various strains of the White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV).

Susan conducts all PCR and RT-PCR assays. She also produces slides for histologic interpretation and interprets slides made from bivalve and fish samples. In addition, she trains and oversees the volunteers and interns that work in the lab on a part-time basis.

Special health training courses Susan has attended include: the Shrimp Pathology Short Course at U of A in 1999 (Dr. Lightner), Fish Health Management Workshops at U of F in 1998 and 2000 (Dr. Francis-Floyd) and individualized training in oyster histology and Dermo analysis at Rutgers Haskin Research Lab in NJ in 2000 (Dr. Ford).
